In recent years, the City of Vernon has seen an influx of clothing manufacturers, many of whom are relocating from Downtown Los Angeles. These companies do everything from cutting and sewing, to design and dyeing, importing and distribution. The largest growth area is in design. While many of the companies send their materials overseas to be sewn, a large percentage of Vernon-based companies are doing their own alterations, adding to the garment, then packaging, and sending the product off to retail.
As the recent 2008 Vernon Economic Impact Study, conducted by the Los Angeles County EDC indicates, fashion is a key industry in the Los Angeles County economy. As noted in the study, more than 10% of LA County employees involved in the Fashion Apparel & Textile Design businesses are employed in the City of Vernon. The city’s unique character supports these types of businesses in an optimal fashion, allowing them to flourish as they might not in other areas.
