“One of the best things about working with the City of Vernon’s Health Department is consistency. You work with the same department, the same inspector throughout the entire permitting process…you know what they want and you’re able to comply easily.”
Brett Willberg, Union Ice
Vernon & Environment
The City of Vernon Health & Environmental Control (H&EC) is one of only four city health departments in California. It is charged with monitoring and enforcing health-related federal, state and municipal laws, rules, ordinances and regulations within the 5 ? miles that comprise the City of Vernon.
While conventional health departments are oriented toward a residential population, Vernon’s budget is directed to regulating the city’s industrial operations. The City is focused on protecting the environment, and passes strict ordinances governing the operations of the industrial businesses in areas including heavy manufacturers, food processors, garment manufacturers and hazardous waste, storage and disposal companies.
Special programs that address the environment are strictly enforced, including:
- Accidental Release Prevention
- Animal Control
- Cross Connection Control Program (for drinking water)
- Food Program
- Garment Manufacturing Program
- Hazardous Materials Monitoring
- Hazardous Waste
- Public/Employee HealthEducation
- Solid Waste Management
- Storm Water Control
- Underground Tanks
- Vector Control
- Water Quality Program
