“Vernon has made a tremendous impact on the community of Boyle Heights through non-profits such as the Variety Boys & Girls Club. The generous donations of business owners in Vernon have ensured that the doors of the club stay open and programs can continue.” Joe Alba, LAPD Vernon & Nearby CommunitiesThe City of Vernon plays a large role in supporting the communities that directly surround its borders. Neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, Huntington Park and Maywood benefit from a wide variety of charity efforts undertaken by Vernon businesses. Groups like the Variety Boys & Girls Club and the Salesian Club of Los Angeles are the recipients of substantial grants and scholarships from Vernon charitable organizations such as Baker Commodities’ Jerome Foundation. ![]() A reading/book donation program run by the Rotary Club was successful in arranging a visit by the first lady Barbara Bush to the Vernon City Elementary School several years ago thanks, in large part, to Jim Boltinghouse of Sweetener Products. And two families who worked in Vernon and lost their lives in a tragic car collision in 2006 were honored, and thousands of dollars raised for their survivors, by the Vernon Police Officers Association and Vernon Chamber of Commerce via a special pancake breakfast. Although Vernon has very few actual residents, its companies and employees work hard to honor and support the surrounding communities, many of which are home to people who work in Vernon. These charitable activities, and hundreds more, ensure that the less fortunate in neighborhoods bordering Vernon are not forgotten, and are given as many opportunities as possible. Links:
